In Will County, Illinois, the Forest Preserve says the pelicans are back. Their website says the American white pelicans, one of the largest birds in North America according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, generally return in September during their annual Fall migration, often spotted in local waterways into November. The birds, they say, are the lesser-known cousins of brown pelicans found along the ocean and gulf coasts. The Four Rivers Environmental Education Center in Channahon southwest of Chicago has a day of hikes and presentations planned for their Pelican Watch program on Saturday September 23, 2023.
