Earth Day is April 22

Today, April 22nd is Earth Day, the anniversary of the birth of the environmental movement. The theme for this year’s Earth Day is Restore Our Earth. Events around the world are meant to educate the public with new ways to live sustainably — for instance, recycling, reducing household energy use and saving water. There are a number of ways to celebrate in the Region. In Hammond, Mayor Thomas McDermott, Jr. and Hammond Parks and Recreation are partnering with Discover Books for an Earth Day Book Drive this week. Look for the blue bin at several locations throughout Hammond through this Saturday, April 24th. Residents are encouraged to help keep books out of landfills and in the hands of readers. And, the Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County says it is offering special Earth Day tips in their newsletter, available online at , featuring ideas about how to reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink in everyday life. Plus, the district’s Spring 2021 Virtual Master Recycler Class gets underway on Earth Day tonight, class size is limited. Contact the district for details.
