Grant to Help Valpo FD Reduce Risk of Carcinogens to Firefighters

The Valparaiso Fire Department has received a grant of just over 3-thousand dollars from the Indiana Public Employers Plan which will be used to purchase equipment to help mitigate the exposure to carcinogens left on firefighting gear after a fire or hazardous material incident.  Researchers have found that firefighters have a 68% higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer than the general population, and the grant funds will help firefighters wash their assigned gear more quickly so it can be put back in service for the next emergency.
