According to the American Heart Association, each day, 2,150 Americans die from heart disease- the No. 1 killer in the United States, and stroke, the No. 5 killer and leading cause of severe disability, claims the lives of nearly 219,000 each year. Since the inception of the Heart Walk, AHA says mortality rates from cardiovascular disease and stroke have fallen by 45 percent. However, AHA says even though there have been great strides made in how heart disease and stroke are diagnosed and treated, there is far more work to be done.
