The Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County is hosting a Household Hazardous Waste Collection on Saturday, October 10th from 9am to 2pm CDT at the Porter County Expo Center and Fairgrounds at State Road 49 and Division Road in Valparaiso. The District will also be collecting used tires as well as clean and dry plastic bags during this event. Household Hazardous Waste or “HHW” are unwanted products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable or reactive ingredients that require special care upon disposal. The District sponsors collection days throughout the year that allow Porter County residents to safely dispose of these materials. Also happening at this event is a gas can exchange sponsored by Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC). Porter County residents can bring an old gas can and get a new, environmentally-friendly one in exchange, one per vehicle, while supplies last.
Acceptable materials include household cleaners, pesticides, kerosene, gasoline, oil-based paints, antifreeze, solvents and much more. *Please Note: Electronics and Latex paint will NOT be accepted at this event* A longer list of accepted items can be found at www.portercountyrecycling.org . Typically tires are collected in early spring, but due to COVID-19, tire collection will take place at the October 10th Household Hazardous Waste event. Residents may bring up to 4 tires under 20 inches for free (after the first 4 there is a charge of $3 per tire under 20 inches). Tires measuring 20 to 25 inches will cost $5 each. Tires over 25 inches are $15 each.
Residents are advised to use caution and continue to observe all social distancing guidelines. Contact the Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County at 219-465-3694 or visit www.portercountyrecycling.org for more information.
