Three-Day Closure of Silhavy Road-LaPorte Avenue Intersection Next Week

A three-day closure is scheduled next week at the Silhavy Road and LaPorte Avenue intersection for construction work related to the roundabout being built there. Officials say all directions will be affected and posted detours will reroute traffic. Access to businesses surrounding the intersection will remain open. The temporary closure is set to begin at midnight this Monday morning June 34th and will be lifted at 9 pm Wednesday, June 26th.

Detour information: NB & SB Silhavy Road will be detoured on US 30/Sturdy Rd./Evans Ave. WB LaPorte Ave. traffic will be detoured at Sturdy Rd. to US 30 East to SR 49 North to LaPorte Ave. EB LaPorte Ave. traffic will be detoured at SR 49 to US 30 West to Sturdy Rd. Access to business surrounding the intersection will remain open. The temporary closure will be lifted at 9:00 PM Wednesday, June 26, 2019. Phase II Maintenance of Traffic will be in-place at the conclusion of the intersection closure.

“Despite having rain on 26 of 31 days in May, we remain on schedule to have the new Silhavy/LaPorte roundabout substantially complete by the end of the year,” said Don McGinley, Valparaiso’s Director of Project and Facility Management. “This short interruption of service at the intersection will allow us to enter the next phase of construction,” he said. The closure is necessary to maintain safety while the traffic signal is temporarily disabled.

Once complete, city officials say the new roundabout will efficiently move approximately 35,000 vehicles per day, using a two-lane design with four legs. Construction is happening in phases through the end of the year. Other than this three-day closure, the plan is for traffic to be maintained in all directions for the duration of the construction process. Businesses have been notified of the closure in advance, and on-site signage will keep the public informed of the closure and detours.
