Cooling Center Information

An Excessive Heat Warning will continue through Saturday in Northwest Indiana.  Cooling centers are available across the Region:  (Refresh to update list)

Town of Griffith departments are preparing for the extremely high temperatures which are expected throughout the week. In order to ensure the safety of our residents, a temporary cooling center will be made available at the Griffith Central Fire Station. Residents without access to shelter of a safe temperature can request shelter by responding to the Griffith Police Department lobby located at 115 N Broad St. If residents are unable to provide their own transportation to the center, they are encouraged to call 219-924-7503 or 911. Residents who wish to utilize the cooling center are encouraged to bring blankets, sleeping bags, pillows and other essentials, as well as snacks, medicines, and other items to hold them over during their time at the center.

Residents should call 911 for emergency services, but please be aware that power outages should be reported to NIPSCO at 1-800-4NIPSCO (1-800-464-7726) or by texting “OUT” to 444111, and also know that neither police nor dispatch can advise of when power will be restored. However, information about widespread outages can be gained by logging onto the NIPSCO outage webpage at:

Citizens of Griffith are also encouraged to check on seniors or anyone else who may be more prone to suffer from the affects of these extreme conditions. Citizens can call 911 should they feel the need for police or fire personnel to check on the welfare of anyone at risk.

Information with relation to the services available during this extreme weather will be updated on the Griffith Police, Griffith Fire, and other Town of Griffith Facebook pages, the Town of Griffith website (www.griffith.in.gov), as well as telephonic Code Red messages. Please take time and care to watch out for each other and be extremely safe throughout these coming days. Thank you.

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott, Jr. has announced that due to the extreme heat expected this week, the City of Hammond has identified several buildings as cooling centers, including: The Jean Shepherd Center, the Lost Marsh Golf Course Clubhouse and Hammond City Hall.

Individuals may use these facilities during regular operating hours if necessary to cool down from temperatures that are predicted to remain high through the weekend. Also, the splash pad at Hessville Park is a great way to cool off and is free to the public.

“I would ask our residents to check in on their neighbors, especially senior citizens who are most vulnerable by the extreme heat,” stated Mayor McDermott. ”Stay hydrated and wear light weight, light colored clothing. If power outages occur and it becomes necessary, we will open the Jean Shepherd Center and Lost Marsh Clubhouse overnight”
